CHARLIE'S
WISH
Charlie loved Easter.
Not only was it usually the beginning of the fine spring weather, but all
the flowers were coming into bloom and Coton looked at it's best from where
he sat on top of the church spire. His only regret was that he had
never had an Easter Egg. He decided that he would ask the Weathercock
Fairy if she would grant this wish and let him have just one, particularly
as he hadn't asked for anything for ages.
As usual, she appeared at the
end of the month looking as beautiful as usual and sat on the parapet below
him combing her hair. When she asked him if everything was all right
or whether he needed oiling he plucked up his courage and asked if she
could grant his wish. He was so excited when she said yes, and as
Easter got nearer he could hardly keep still even when there was no wind
blowing.
Unfortunately he had forgotten
to ask the fairy to allow him to move his wings so that, when the egg suddenly
appeared in front of him, he couldn't catch it and it rolled down the spire
and broke on the church roof.
Before he could recover from
the shock he noticed dozens of tiny gold things had come out of the egg
and were moving around on the roof. Imagine his surprise when he
realised that they were tiny weathercock chicks all like him but each only
about 2 centimetres high !! Charlie began to panic, there weren't
that many new churches to perch on !
The silly fairy had thought
that, when he asked for an egg, he had wanted to have lots of children,
and soon they were all over the place !!. Just as well that he was
always given a week to cancel any wish that he didn't like! He decided
straight away that it wasn't such a good idea after all and asked her to
take them all back.
He was a bit shocked when she
said that she couldn't. Luckily she had a bright idea and, waving
her magic wand, she turned them all into little fluffy yellow chicks to
decorate next year's chocolate eggs.
